Columbia Ford Shoppers Learn How to Check Their Car’s Oil
Aug 31, 2017 - 2 minute read
It is recommended to check your car’s oil at least once a month so that you are always aware of its condition. Make sure that the oil is clean and that there is enough, which will result in a car that runs smoothly. If the oil begins to smell or looks dirty, it is time to change the oil so that it is clean and fresh.
Our Columbia Ford service center is here to help drivers learn how to check their oil on their own time, that way they can ensure they are in good shape in their own garage.
Follow the steps below to learn how you can check your oil:
Step #1: Pull the Dipstick Out
First you must locate the dipstick and then pull it out and wipe it clean with a lint-free rag. It’s important to ensure that the engine is cold or has been off for at least 10-minutes before doing this so you don’t hurt yourself.
Step #2: Re-Insert Dipstick Back Into Pipe
Since the pipe is curved, the dipstick may get stuck during this process. If so, turn the dipstick around so it bends naturally with the curves.
Step #3: Pull Out Dipstick and Look at the Film
Remove the stick and check the film on the end of the dipstick. Check out how high the oil film reaches on the stick and from this either add or change the oil as deemed necessary. Some shoppers would rather our Columbia professionals give their Ford an oil change if needed, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
Step #4: Put Dipstick Back in Pipe
Just like that the process is over. A helpful tip to ensure your oil is clean is to rub a little between your thumb and index finger. The oil should be changed if it leaves a little dirty smudge when doing this.
