Although it may go unnoticed, the cooling system in your car is extremely important. Used to keep the engine and radiator cool, the temperature of the coolant rises and expands as the car runs. When expanded, any excess coolant moves into a reservoir tank through rubber hoses.

Unfortunately, the cooling system can sometimes run into problems such as leaks, which will mess with your vehicle’s efficiency and effectiveness. It is important to fix a leak right away, and our Ford service center near Clarksville is here to show you how.

There are really only three common causes for coolant leaks, although each leak can vary in severity. If you have been noticing that coolant has been dripping on the ground under your car or that your reservoir tank isn’t as full as it should be, it’s possible there’s a leak. Another tip-off is that your engine suddenly gets overheated. Below are the common causes of coolant leaks:

Leaky Radiator Cap

A leaky or weak radiator cap is one way coolant can be lost. Since the coolant expands once it is heated, the coolant could flow out of the cap since it isn’t secure or correctly fitting. This can be diagnosed with a pressure test for the radiator cap. Need a new cap? Don’t worry, our Ford parts department serving Clarksville can help.

Internal Leak

When there is an internal leak, a puddle will not be made visible under your car. This problem can be detected by noticing that your coolant level does not stay constant and you need to refill your tank over and over again. This could be caused by a few things, including a leaky head gasket.

External Leak

This one is easy to diagnose. When there is an external leak, the coolant escapes from your car and your vehicle quickly overheats. Most times, a split or broken hose is the cause of this, which can be seen fairly easily. By doing a simple visual inspection, problems much like this can be spotted and fixed.
